The Ultimate Budget Starter Phone for 2026

In a world where flagship phones cost as much as a used car, there’s a growing market for devices that just… work. Enter the Blackview Wave 7C.

If you aren't looking to play the latest high-end games and just want a reliable companion for daily communication, this might be the most practical purchase you make this year.

Who is this phone for?

The Wave 7C is built for simplicity. It’s a perfect fit for:

  • Non-tech-savvy users who need a straightforward interface.

  • Social butterflies who primarily use WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, and Instagram.

  • Media lovers who enjoy catching up on YouTube videos or scrolling TikTok.

  • Seniors or Students looking for a first smartphone that doesn't break the bank.

Design & What’s in the Box

The Wave 7C is surprisingly lightweight and comfortable to hold, featuring "R" sculpted corners that feel premium despite the budget price tag. It comes in three vibrant colors: Vitality Orange, Phantom Black, and Arctic Blue.

Inside the box:

  • Blackview Wave 7C Smartphone

  • USB-C Cable (Charging & Data)

  • SIM Tray Ejector tool

  • User Manuals

  • Clear silicone smartphone case

Note: To keep the price low and the box slim, a power brick is not included. You can use any standard USB-C charger you already have at home!

Performance: Expectations vs. Reality

Let's talk numbers. The Wave 7C is powered by the Unisoc Tiger T310. It’s perfectly capable of handling your chat apps and social feeds, but it is not a gaming machine. If you try to run Genshin Impact or heavy 3D titles, you will notice significant lag.

Benchmark Results:

  • Geekbench 6: 441 (Single-Core) | 820 (Multi-Core)

  • 3D Mark (Wild Life): 183

The "Virtual RAM" Secret:

The phone comes with 4GB of physical RAM, but Blackview allows you to expand this up to 16GB using "Virtual RAM" (taking space from your storage).

  • Default: 2GB expanded.

  • Maximum: 12GB expanded.

The Catch: Non-technical users might never find this setting in the menus. If you're buying this for someone else, I recommend diving into the settings and enabling the maximum expansion for them—it makes multitasking feel much smoother!

Cameras: Capturing the Moment

The 32MP Rear Camera and 13MP Front Camera are what I’d call "fair." They won't win any photography awards, but in daylight, they produce clear, social-media-ready shots. It’s more than enough for snapping a photo of a grocery list, recording a video of the grandkids, or a quick video call on WhatsApp.

However, there is a noticeable downside. Visually, the smartphone appears to have four cameras: one on the front and three on the back. Sadly, two of the three rear cameras are completely fake, placed there purely for visual appeal. Because the phone's design is heavily inspired by the latest iPhone 17 Pro, I believe the brand added these extra "lenses" so users wouldn't feel left out of current design trends, allowing them to buy a budget device that still looks cool and modern. It's clearly not an attempt to scam buyers, as the box explicitly mentions only two functional cameras—and, of course, there is a Blackview logo on the back, not an Apple one.

The "Bloatware" Compromise

Out of the box, you will notice several pre-installed sponsored apps and games. While "bloatware" is often seen as a negative, it represents a very reasonable compromise here. By including these sponsored applications, the manufacturer can subsidize the final cost of the device, keeping the phone affordable and accessible for everyone.

The good news is that you aren't stuck with them. I tested it, and you can easily remove all of these unwanted apps: just tap and hold on the app icon, then select "Uninstall." It takes only a few minutes during your initial setup to clean your home screen exactly to your liking.

The Verdict

The Blackview Wave 7C excels because it doesn't try to be something it’s not. It’s an affordable, lightweight device running Android 16 that covers all the basics with ease.

Pros:

  • Very affordable (under €100).

  • Great battery life (5000mAh).

  • Lightweight and stylish design.

  • Modern software with AI features (DokeOS 5.0).

  • Pre-applied screen protector.

Cons:

  • Low gaming performance.

  • No charging brick in the box.

  • Virtual RAM requires manual setup.

  • Two of the three rear cameras are fake (aesthetic only).
